Urgench

Urgench city is located on the left bank of the Amu Darya.

Its appearance is associated with the middle of the XVII century. Then the Khiva khan Abdulgazi was moved to a new place in the Khorezm oasis by the inhabitants of an ancient desert by this time, apparently existing in the 1st century BC. n., the city of Kunya-Urgench (Ancient Urgench or Gurgandzh) is the medieval capital of a rich and powerful Khorezm state. The ruins of Kunya-Urgench with individual, well-preserved mausoleums, palaces and madrasahs are located about 150 km north-west of present-day Urgench, in the part of the Sarikamysh delta in Amudarya belonging to Turkmenistan. At that time, a small fortress called New Urgench was built on the site. Previously, it was a small trading village of the Khiva khanate. After the accession of Central Asia to Russia, trading enterprises and transport offices appeared here, carrying out trading operations of the Khiva khanate with Russia. A small factory for the production of handmade cotton goods was commissioned, followed by a creamery.

Currently, well-groomed Urgench is the industrial and cultural center of the Khorezm region. The city is crossed by a large irrigation canal Shavat - one of the largest irrigation facilities in Khorezm. The main part of Urgench is on the right bank, but the city has already moved to the left bank.
